Research question
Which WASH service gaps did a rapid shelter assessment identify?
Method and context
Convenience sample of 20 accessible centres; interviews, toilet counts and visual checks of water sources and services.
Study summary
Assesses services around two weeks after the disaster, distinguishing water availability from water-quality testing.
Findings
All had drinking-water but no post-disaster quality testing; none had garbage collection. Only four met the toilet-count benchmark used by the study.
Contribution
Provides a WASH needs-assessment example connecting service conditions with shelter management.
Interpretation limits
Authors note access/security selection limits; absent registries required population estimates. This does not prove contamination or establish a current standard.
A question for further research
Project proposal: build a SITREP separating observations, untested conditions and assigned follow-up for water quality and waste.
A starting point for a study design: extend the literature search, specify methods and outcomes, and assess ethics requirements for the data and participants.
Connect evidence to KSEC / OBE
Project-proposed critical-appraisal evidence, not research findings or accreditation criteria from the original authors.
- K
- Explain the question, concepts and findings with locators in the original.
- S
- Compare methods, variables and limitations with another study before designing a test or CPX.
- E
- Separate reported results from your proposals, cite originals and examine implications for vulnerable groups.
- C
- Record responses to critique and revisions after new evidence. Observe behaviour repeatedly, not from a single reading.
